Bounce error fix

Gmail 550 5.7.1: message likely unsolicited

Gmail blocked your email as likely spam. Here is how to find out why and fix it.

What the bounce says

550-5.7.1 Our system has detected that this message is likely unsolicited mail. To reduce the amount of spam sent to Gmail, this message has been blocked.

Gmail judged the email itself, or your sending reputation, to be spam. Authentication may be fine; the problem is usually what you sent, who you sent it to, or how much.

How to fix it

1

Check the basics first. Run the full domain scan and the blacklist check to rule out SPF, DKIM, DMARC and blacklist problems.

2

Look at the list. Old, bought or scraped lists carry spam traps and complaints. Verify addresses and send only to people likely to want the email.

3

Simplify the email. Plain text, one link at most, no attachments, no link shorteners, and a clear way to opt out.

4

Lower the volume per inbox. Stay around 30 a day per inbox and warm up new inboxes for three weeks.

See where your email lands

Once the basics pass, an inbox placement test shows whether Gmail now puts you in the inbox.
